And, crucially, they are a place to share and connect with nature, thereby reaping the many rewards, large and small, which that brings. Good design, mindful of both the environment and the lives we live, helps to bring all this together. A garden can be many things and should be designed to reflect the people and the place.

I have worked on all sorts of gardens but ultimately they are a space to relax and recharge - part of that is undoubtedly about contact with plants and nature. Professional design advice to get you started, to help you see the potential of your outdoor space and to resolve specific issues. On-site 'design chats' are intended to quickly and affordably provide both inspiration for your garden and practical insights into taking your project forward.

A full design service is available for projects where there is genuine interest in sustainable design, and a commitment to minimising carbon impact while maximising the potential for habitat creation. Schemes are developed into masterplans before focusing on detail such as planting.

About
Report
While gardens are a personal space, I believe they are also part of the wider environment. Increasingly it is imperative that they contribute to tackling, not adding to, the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. Good design can create the beautiful places we want to spend time in, while also treading lightly and providing habitat for other creatures.

My focus currently is offering short on-site advice sessions to provide people with creative and practical inspiration for their gardens. You may have many ideas for your garden, or none at all, or you may just be a bit overwhelmed by the possibilities. Either way many people find themselves at an impasse and don't quite know where to start.
Teaching
Report
I have been involved with gardens and garden design for more than 20 years, exhibited at RHS shows, worked on TV garden programs and taught garden design and horticulture to university students. What I love most of all is helping people to get the most out of their gardens, to recognise that there is more than one way to design a garden and encouraging them to have a go.

The site - A large courtyard, previously part of a farmyard, contained within a barn conversion. The brick walls on all four sides and a ground surface of heavy duty concrete made this a hot and harsh place. The brief - The client wanted a much more user-friendly space and something with a bit of style.
