Athelas was founded on a passion for big bold specimen plants, lots of statement and character. While that very much remains, we've mellowed a little over time and have been won over by the grace and charm of the more traditional nursery plants. So our range has become a healthy and diverse mix of the usual and unusual, still the big and bold, but also the traditional old favourites too, something we think for everyone.
We are open 7 days a week, our nursery address is Athelas Plants, Hooe Road, Ninfield, TN33 9EL. Here's a snippet of just some of the trees just in to the nursery ready for Autumn planting. Just a quick mention, this weekend is Hooe Open Gardens, we are on the circuit including 14 beautiful local gardens.
For more info visit. Bottlebrush about to burst in to flower, a sea of cycads, and very special bonsai Olive trees. The B2095 from Eastbourne and Whydown. After the snow, some of our tropical plants that we have planted out here at the nursery are looking a little sorry for themselves.

Preparation
Report
When planting, make sure that the top of the compost in the pot is level with the surrounding soil surface. Take a little time to plant carefully so that your plants settle snugly in to their new home. Choose a suitable place for the plant in your garden; be very aware of the plant's own preferences to wind, sunlight and soil conditions.
Soil Types
Report
Here is a brief outline of the basic soil types - chalky, clay, loamy, peaty, sandy and silty. To find out your soil type, take a look at it and feel it. Add some water and try rolling it between your hands. Observe how your soil looks and feels, and whether it's sticky, gritty, friable, or slimy. This will tell you what type of soil you have.
Pruning
Report
Shrubs create fantastic structure in the garden so it's essential to keep them in top condition with regular pruning. This improves a plant's shape and encourage flowers and fruits. Cuts are essentially wounds to the plant where disease could enter so use sharp and clean cutting tools and make clean cuts without leaving snags.
