We develop our flatweave with an ethos firmly rooted in heritage and craftsmanship, using experimentation in colour, pattern and texture to maintain a contemporary edge. Our runners are woven on specially adapted Hattersley looms using a British cheviot wool blend that is spun and dyed in Yorkshire.
We are committed to using the best possible materials and are proud of our British production. A skilled team of craftspeople are involved at every stage of production, with all finishing done by hand. Staying true to traditional techniques keeps our designs tethered to the people and processes involved in their production.
In the late 1980's, the owners of a grand country residence approached Roger Oates and Fay Morgan with an historic flatwoven fragment they had discovered hidden under their floorboards. These types of coverings, common in the 18th century were usually plain in colour and void of pattern. This unique piece, worn and heavily faded, revealed vibrant colour choice and deliberate pattern design.

Runners

Warm and inviting, our 100% wool Flatweave runners add the perfect welcoming touch to your hall and stairway. The nature of the weave gives the designs added texture and the suppleness means that they can be fitted on almost any staircase - straight or winding. A selection of our runners have a complementary 'border' and 'ground' design which can be used together on staircases and landings.
Bespoke

The team at Roger Oates work individually with clients to create a Bespoke design unique and personal to their own home. The process starts with CAD visualisations which are then translated into handwoven swatches for client approval. Existing designs can be customised with new colours from the extensive Roger Oates colour chain, or re-sized to suit a specific staircase or hallway.
Flatweave rugs

Rugs can be created using large scale pattern which is bold and dramatic or small fine lines which form subtle texture. Our extensive collection of runner designs can be used simply as a narrow width in hallways or sewn together to create original bespoke rugs of any dimension. A simple blind hem gives a clean contemporary edge, or add a linen binding tape for a classic finishing touch.
Tapis d'Avignon rugs

Tapis d'Avignon rugs are made from heavily felted wool that feels as soft and indulgent as it looks. Our Tapis d'Avignon are made from individual geometric shapes joined with a decorative stitch that can tone or contrast with the main colours. If you are looking for a bespoke design we can work with you to create a rug using any combination of squares and stripes.
